چکیده

Fungus growth methods for estimating either vitamin B1 thiazole or vitamin B1 pyrimidinel have been used by Robbins and Kavanagh (l), Kavanagh (2), and Krampitz and Woolley (3), and a fermentation stimulation method has been described by Schultz, Atkin, and Frey (4). A procedure utilizing the synthesis of vitamin B1 by yeast from thiazole and pyrimidine has been used in this laboratory to estimate minute quantities of these moieties. By suitable differential procedure, thiamine, thiazole, and pyrimidine in food materials may be estimated individually. The procedure and certain of its limitations are described in this paper.

Photochemistry of the Thiazole Component of Vitamin B1

Photolysis of the pyrimidine component of vitamin B1 by ultraviolet radiation has been reported in a recent paper by the present writers (1). It was shown that inactivation resulted not only from the breakdown of the pyrimidine ring structure but also from the loss or alteration of those side groups or radicals known to be essential for the biological functioning of the vitamin. Nevertheless, o...

Thiamin Biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cer-evisiae ORIGIN OF CARBON-2 OF THE THIAZOLE MOIETY By ROBERT L. WHITE and ]AN D. SPENSER

Although the structure of thiamin (vitamin B,) has been known for over 40 years (Williams, 1936; Grewe, 1936) and its chemical synthesis accomplished soon thereafter (Williams & Cline, 1936; Andersag & Westphal, 1937; Todd & Bergel, 1937), the biosynthetic pathway to thiamin (3) has still not been elucidated completely. It is well established that the pyrimidine (1) and thiazole (2) moieties ar...

Assay of thiamine in biologic fluids.

COMPARED WITH CHEMICAL METHODS, microbiologic assay methods for measuring vitamin activity often are more sensitive, more specific, and require less investment in equipment, and less material for assay-important considerations when biologic substances are to be analyzed (1). Thiamine is one of the few vitamins assayable chemically (2), but this technic is often impractical in clinical situation...

The biosynthesis of thiamine. 1. Enzymatic formation of thiamine and phosphate esters of the pyrimidine moiety of thiamine.

The biosynthesis of thiamine appears to be accomplished with the initial formation of the pyrimidine and thiazole moieties by independent biosynthetic pathways, followed by a final step in which 2-methyl-4-amino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine and 4methyl-5-(/3-hydroxyethyl) thiazole are joined together to give thiamine. This conclusion was indicated originally from the observations that certain thia...

The Incorporation of Radioactive Sulfur into Thiamine by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.

The biosynthesis of thiamine has been believed to be accomplished with the initial formation of the pyrimidine and thiazole moieties by independent routes, followed by a final step in which pyrimidine and thiazole are jointed together to form thiamine. Recently, Nose (1-3), Brown (4-7), and Leder (8, 9) separated the enzyme system from cell-free extracts of bakers' yeast which is capable of syn...
